GRIFFIN, Ronald George- age 75, of Bedford, NS, formerly of Forteau, Labrador, died on December 14, 2025, surround by family and blessed with psalms and prayers while at the Victoria General Hospital Site, QEII HSC, Halifax. Ron was born in Jersey Harbour, NL and was a son of the late Donald and Alfreda (Tibbo) Griffin.
From very humble beginnings, Ron built a life of abundance and blessing with his hands - a fisherman, carpenter, plumber, electrician and builder. He was “Mr. Fix It,” especially while working at the Forteau Health Center (Grenfell Health) for many years until his retirement in 2017. He loved to share his creative talents though the gift of
folkart, even making a replica of the town of Forteau for Come Home Year, not to mention countless wooden treasures that can be found in homes from coast to coast. He had a gift for seeing opportunities, where others could only foresee challenges.
His pleasures were simple - a good story, a laugh, time with his family, liver and onions, a ride on the water or a drive in the country, a day picking bakeapples, a moose hunting trip, spending the day at his cabin, an afternoon in his workshop, making molasses candy on Christmas Eve and watching his Montreal Canadians (at least when they were winning anyway).
Ron fiercely loved his family. He was a doting grandfather and great grandfather, a firm foundation for his beloved daughters and a constant companion for “Hal” who was the love of his life. He was a community leader, preacher, and fast friend to anyone fortunate enough to meet him, and often the first person to raise his hand whenever there was someone in need or a situation that needed a response. He became “family of the heart” to many in his community with a lasting impression reaching far and wide.
Ron’s deep faith moved mountains and he built bridges for people who faced difficulties. He became a shelter for those who were caught in the storms of life, many of which he faced himself. “Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.” (Romans 8:24-25) No one hopes to be diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, but with a faith as strong as the namesake of the waters where he lived out much of his life, Ron sought to embody grace and compassion, peace and understanding in how he spent the time that was gifted to him.
If you’re reading this and feeling isolated and overwhelmed, Ron would want you to know that you are not alone, God is with you, and there are people who care for you -there’s a life of abundance and blessing for you too.
Ron will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years, Hilda (Hillyard); daughters, Daisy (Barry) Turnbull; Veronica (Christopher) Letto; and Lorna (Matthew) Fillier; grandchildren, Johnathan (Jalyssa), Darian, Dominic and Isobel; great grandchildren, Lily and Lacy; twin brother, Reginald (Gladys) Griffin; sisters, Shirley (Gerry) Dobbin; Dulcie (Lloyd) Gosse; Anne (Jeff) Pardy; brother Hubert (Melinda) Griffin; many nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Ellie, the kitten who brought him so much comfort in difficult times.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Lillian; brother, Clarence; sister, Cora.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale.
Visitations will be held on Monday, December 29th 2025 at St. John’s United Church, Fall River Nova Scotia from 3-5pm and 6-8pm.
After almost 10 years living away from the shores of Labrador which he loved with all his heart, Ron will return home one last time to Forteau, Labrador for a Celebration of Life, taking place on August 9th 2026 at Living Waters Pentecostal Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lung Association.
On behalf of Ron, his family would like to offer sincere and abiding appreciation to all
the staff of the 7A Palliative Care Unit at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. Their compassion, dedication, humour and grace were as special as the man in their care and for that, we will be forever grateful.
