Gladys Susan Twombly Obituary

Gladys Susan (nee Stevens) (Hill) Twombly -passed at age 99, in Elk Court Brookfield just weeks from her 100th birthday on February 10, 2026. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born Susie Anna Gladys Stevens to Edith Stevens in Clam Harbour, Nova Scotia. Gladys grew up in the Eastern Shore, then moved to Halifax where she started her family with Curtis. As the children grew, they decided to move to Hants County and began running C. Hill’s General Store in South Maitland. She ran this store for 26 years until her retirement.

Gladys enjoyed working with her hands through her many talents of painting, knitting and crafting. She loved shopping, bowling and bingo. In her later years with John in Kentville, she travelled and began volunteering and serving with the Salvation Army leaving lasting memories on many people.

She is survived by son David and daughter Viola (Larry), daughters-in-law Brenda Hill and Trish Lunn; grandchildren Sarah (Kirby), Laura (Kevin), Brian (Julie), Joe, Robert “Jamie” (Beatrice), Sharon (Mike) and Barry (Jennifer); great grandchildren, Brayden, Kaylee, Braylee, Chloe, Jasper, Neveah, Melody, Heather, Shanea, Eric, Mikeal, Declan and Jace and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by husbands, Curtis Hill and John “Jack” Twombly; sons Donald and Robert and a great grandson Baby Elliott Hill.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers through the last years at Valley View Villa and Elk Court, as well as Brenda Hill for the countless hours spent as Glady’s companion as she journeyed through the years in the care homes in which we are forever grateful.

Visitation will be held at 10am, until time of funeral service at 11AM Wednesday, December 17, 2025, in Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie,  after which a reception will be held in the funeral home hospitality area. The burial will follow in the MacDougall Cemetery, South Maitland.
