HINES, Paul Ashley — age 80, of Dutch Settlement, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, November 23, 2025, in the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital. Born in Dutch Settlement, Paul grew up and spent his life on the family farm, where he raised and cared for many dairy and beef cattle over the years. Every Thursday, he could be found at the Livestock Sale in Truro, where he enjoyed connecting with farmers from the surrounding areas and across the Atlantic Provinces. 

In his younger years, Paul worked for more than 20 years at Shaw’s Pipe Plant. He was also active in his community and loved sports. He played hockey at the old rink in Lantz and baseball with his friends on the old Lantz ballfield. He enjoyed fishing, darts, and had a deep love for old-time country music, and never passed up the chance to dance.

Paul is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances (Crowe) Hines; son, Michael (Alana) Hines, Dutch Settlement; daughter, Michelle Hines (Raymond Buela), Calgary; and his three grandchildren, Rachel Buela, Ethan Hines, and Malea Buela; along with his beloved dog, Philly.  His siblings also survive him, Juanita (Elwood) Preeper, Dutch Settlement, Melba Campbell, Lantz, Perry (Tammy Hinch) Hines, Carroll’s Corner, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Mildred (Ashley) Hines; brothers, Keith Hines, Foster Hines, Blanchard Hines, Ricky and Sylvanus Hines in infancy; sisters, Marina Ashley, Wanda Isenor, and Doreen Keyes.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Elmsdale and Shubenacadie.

By Paul’s request, there will be no visitation.  A graveside service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement, at 11:00am on Monday, December 1st, 2025, where he will be laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Canadian Lung Association or a charity of your choosing.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses who assisted with his care at home and in the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, who helped care for him during his final days.
