Peter James Cantle Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter “Pete” James Cantle, 80, on November 18, 2025, at Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Pete, of Shubenacadie, NS, was born on June 25, 1945, in Woolwich, England. He is survived by his loving partner, MJ Ripley of Wolfville, NS; his five children: Sandra Babin (Jo) of Ottawa, ON; Carolyn Rau (Kevin) of Truro, NS; Ian Cantle (Michelle) of Caledonia, NS; Natalie Cantle of Sackville, NS; and Michael Cantle of Truro, NS; and seven grandchildren: Zachary, Olivia, Ferris, Jeffrey, Tyler, James, and Wyatt. He loved his children and took every opportunity to speak of their accomplishments and when together, would often announce to anyone who would listen that "he owned all of these, right from the oldest to the youngest”.

He was predeceased by his former wife, Kathy (Thomson) Cantle; his parents, Edith “Madge” and Henry Cantle; his brother, Roy Cantle; and his closest friend, Gerald Knol.

While Pete was known for his determined spirit (aka stubbornness) and corny sense of humour, he was also known for his willingness to help others. For many years, Pete dedicated himself to helping others as a volunteer firefighter and then as a paramedic. Later, as the owner of Pete’s Pumps and Motors, he would drop everything to help his customers, making sure that they were not left without water. He would also do anything for his kids - from urgent car repairs to airport pick ups to fixing a broken appliance to helping with the Hurricane Fiona cleanup.

Pete was also an avid gardener and shared his love of plants with his children and eventually his grandchildren. Always the entrepreneur, he started the family business of Pete’s Plants. For his three oldest children, some of their fondest childhood memories are of spending summers working alongside their Dad in the greenhouse.

His favorite way to spend a morning (or even a weekend) was attending yard sales and auctions - often with Gerald, Natalie, and Michael and then for the last 12 years with MJ. Between yard sales and spending time rock hounding on the beach, he made the most of his retirement years.

He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched with his vast knowledge, humour, and unique spirit.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 23 from 2 - 4pm at the Shubenacadie Legion, 42 Mill Village Rd, Shubenacadie, for those who would like to pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Pete’s name to the Ride For Dad Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation.
