Obituary of Dorothy Weir
WEIR (DODGE), Mary “Dorothy” Louise, age 100, of North Salem, passed away peacefully on November 18th 2025 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Kempt Shore, she was a daughter of the late Lawson and Mabel (Rose) Dodge.
Born to loving parents, Dorothy (also known as Dottie) grew up with her 8 siblings in a household full of love, kindness and strong family bonds. Her home and heart were filled with music; she played the guitar, and her family would gather to play music together long before radios became common. From a young age, Dorothy understood the importance of family and took pride in helping care for her many nieces and nephews, sharing wisdom, warmth, and affection. As a young woman, Dorothy moved to the city of Halifax, where she began working for Moirs Chocolates and Hopgoods Grocery Store. Though her new urban life stood in stark contrast to her quiet rural roots on the Avon River, she embraced it with grace and adaptability. After meeting and marrying Norman, Dorothy embraced life in North Salem where she poured love and devotion into raising their three children. Dorothy had a keen and curious mind, she could recall dates, events, and people with remarkable clarity right up until her recent illness. She loved to talk and to share stories. She treasured her visits with one of her favourite storytellers, Ross Tracey. She saved articles she thought could help others and lovingly kept the obituaries of those she knew. A lifelong learner, she enjoyed sharing knowledge, and her daily newspaper reading kept her connected to both current events and pop culture. Dorothy also enjoyed completing crossword and sudoku puzzles which she attributed to keeping her mind sharp. To her grandchildren, and great grandchildren, she was a constant source of comfort and love; from their earliest days, they felt welcomed, safe, and cherished in her presence. A visit to Dorothy’s always began with a warm welcome and a sweet treat, and it quickly turned into shared stories and newfound family connections. Dorothy was fortunate to remain in her own home, lovingly cared for by her son Howard and her four devoted granddaughters. The care and compassion from the VON was greatly appreciated by Dorothy and her family. She often expressed gratitude for a long life blessed with good health and free from chronic pain.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Stephens; sons, Frank (Suzette) Weir and Howard Weir; granddaughters, Cheryl Stephens; Brenda (Carl) Moore; Melanie (Robert) Wilson; Colleen Weir and Celia Weir-Tobin (Michael Tobin); grandson, Alex Stephens; great grandchildren; Brent, Cassandra, Henry, Parker, Teddy, Frankie, Mabel, Julianna, Emerson and Tennyson; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman; siblings, Lillian Card; Jenny Card; Bertha Tucker; Mervyn Dodge; Charlie Dodge; Lulu Card; Betty Ross and Lloyd Dodge.
A funeral service will be held 1PM Monday, November 24, 2025 in Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, Pastor Robbie Milburn officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home reception area.
Interment will be in Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the CNIB or a charity close to your heart.
