Ethel Marie Paul-Landolt Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Ethel Marie Paul Landolt, age 76, of Indian Brook, on Friday, October 17th, 2025, at her home. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence F. Paul of Membertou and Ethel (Cope) Paul of Millbrook.

Ethel Deedee was a respected elder, a dedicated nurse, and a woman whose style, grace, and sass left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. From an early age, she understood the value of hard work. She shared memories of her childhood, which including traveling by ferry to Newfoundland to sell wooden flowers, helping her family make ends meet. Ethel and her husband, Stephen, worked tirelessly throughout their lives, always putting their family first during their years in Boston.

Ethel’s drive to better herself and help others was evident in her lifelong education and career in nursing. She worked hard to obtain her high school diploma while raising young children, later earning her LPN and RN certifications with an associate degree in Applied Science. Nursing was more than a career to Ethel; it was her passion. She worked in hospitals, nursing homes, and community health settings, and in her later years, became a traveling nurse. Above all, she was the family’s personal nurse, always there to offer advice, comfort, and support.

Ethel’s resilience was unmatched. She faced numerous challenges, including the traumatic experience of surviving Indian Day School, yet she never let these experiences define her. She loved life—its joys, its simple pleasures, and its opportunities for growth. Ethel had an infectious love for fashion, always impeccably dressed with her sunglasses, perfumes, and tan. She reveled in the beauty of the beach, particularly at Old Orchard Beach, Hampton Beach, and Hogan’s Pond, where she would spend hours enjoying the sun and the beach.

Her time living in Boston was especially dear to her. She cherished her involvement with the Boston Indian Council and opened her home to family members, offering them a place to stay whenever they needed it. Ethel was known for her love of dancing, especially to the tunes of the Disco era, and her zest for life was truly contagious.

But above all, Ethel was a devoted family woman. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and had a particularly close bond with her grandchildren: Justine, Mariah, Colby and Lawrence. She shared a special bond with her late son’s partner, Audrey Brooke, who remained a cherished part of her life.

Ethel is survived by her children: Alex Paul, Cheryl (Patrick) Gehue, Christine (Vernon) Maloney, and William (Noime) Nevin; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Lawrence (Louise) Paul, Adrian (Sheila) Paul, Eileen Paul, and Anna Paul.  She also has three godchildren: Lisa Micheal, Boston, and Jarrod Paul & Mason Paul of Membertou.

Ethel was predeceased by parents, her sons Darryl Nevin and Brian Nevin, and her sisters Karen Denny, Jeanette Nevin, and Laurianne Paul. Following their mother’s passing, Ethel Deedee devoted herself to her younger siblings, bringing them to Boston and nurturing a lifelong bond of love and support.
