KNOCKWOOD, Bernard (Bernie) Douglas – age 76, Indian Brook, passed suddenly on
September 27, 2025, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Springhill, he was the son of the late Doug Knockwood and Bertha Knockwood (nee Studivan).
Bernie enjoyed his work helping people and other Indigenous communities throughout the Atlantic provinces. His start was working as a summer student working in Indian Brook teaching youth about the negative effects of intoxicants. This is when he met the love of his life, Jean Nevin. They were married July 6th, 1974. They forged a life that was filled with love, kindness, and support. Bernie got to work as a photographer for the Native Communications Society of NS, as well as worked on various research projects. He worked with the Union of Nova Scotia Indians as their Education Director, Ulnooweg Development as their Economic Development Officer, the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq as their Band Government Advisor. Health Canada in the Indian Inuit Health Services Division, and finally at the Eagle’s Nest Recovery House. As much as he was dedicated to helping people see that life was nothing to regret, he was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He valued trusting friendships and a good cup of coffee. He loved music and felt that for every emotion, event, and difficulty could be explained through music. He felt that all human emotion can be expressed and felt through song. He would want people to remember him as always having the camera to capture the moments, his laughter that would fill the room, and he shared jokes and stories that made you feel you were right there with him. We know in our heart of hearts that his best friend Steve Mike came and got him on his motorbike, because as Bernie told his goddaughter Elle, there are motorcycles in heaven.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Knockwood (nee Nevin); his daughter, Catherine Knockwood; granddaughter, Emmaline; siblings, Carol Ann (Bill Green), Allan, Glenn; godchildren, Elle Michael, Garrett Michael, Shirley Nevin, Brittany MacKenzie, Kalea Nevin, Carson Brooks, Eli Johnson, Frayah and Zayden Bernard, and many
nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Doug and Bertha Knockwood; sister, Maeann
Knockwood; brother, Bert Knockwood; goddaughter, Rosie Nevin and godson, Wlliam McDonald.
Visitation will begin at 12:00pm on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 28 Dowie Road, Indian Brook. Until time of Funeral Service at 1:00pm on October 2nd, 2025, at St. Kateri’s Roman Catholic Church, Indian Brook. Fr. Phil officiating. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Indian Brook. An online Salite has been established on Facebook.
