It is with love and gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Harold “Corky” John Mason of Dutch Settlement, who left us at the age of 88. Born in Halifax on February 13, 1937, to Christina and Harold “Dutchy” Mason.
Corky grew up in a close-knit, loving family with his five siblings: Shirley, Patsy, Robert, Donald and Eleanor. At the age of 10, the family moved to Enfield, where lifelong friendships and community roots took hold. In 1960, he married the love of his life, Mona, beginning a marriage of 65 wonderful years filled with laughter, love, and unwavering commitment. Corky was a devoted husband to Mona and an extraordinary father to his girls, Leanne and Lisa; and caring father-in-law to Albert. His greatest joy was his cherished role as “Grampy” to his grandchildren: Kate, Anna, Thomas, Lauren, and Andrew. Corky cared deeply for all members of our family, including our four-legged family. A true animal lover, Corky cared for his ‘grand dogs’ over the years — Alex, Hayden, and O’Malley — and, more recently, found joy in the company of Sydney the cat, who brought him comfort and companionship. Corky’s work ethic and skill were evident early in his career at the Halifax Shipyard, where he began as a journeyman and then transitioned to the Department of National Defence, where he apprenticed and became a draftsman, proudly serving as a civil servant until his retirement at the age of 59. Beyond work, Corky was a talented athlete, with a lifelong passion for baseball. He played in the Halifax Suburban Baseball League, demonstrating not only his talent but also leadership and commitment to his teammates, many of whom became lifelong friends.
In 2015, Corky was inducted into the East Hants Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Enfield Legionnaires, honoring his team’s talent, dedication, and lasting impact on the local sports community. Even after his baseball career ended, Corky remained on the diamond as the “star” catcher for numerous community softball teams.Equally devoted to his community, Corky volunteered as a firefighter, dedicated his time managing the community centre, and lent his hands and heart to helping build countless homes alongside friends and family. His quiet strength, generosity, and willingness to help - quiet acts of service that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.Corky will be remembered for his kind heart, strong character, and steadfast devotion to those he loved.
He is predeceased by his parents, Christina and Harold, and his siblings Robert and Eleanor.
His legacy lives on through his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and many dear friends. We are deeply grateful to the staff at the Magnolia Continuing Care for their kindness and gentle care, which surrounded dad with dignity and compassion until the end.
A service to celebrate Corky’s life will be held at Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie on Friday, September 19, 2025 between 1 and 3pm, with personal remarks and prayer commencing at 2pm.
Donations may be made in Corky’s memory to any charity dedicated to saving and protecting animals.
Condolences, words of comfort and memories of Corky may be shared with the family at: www.ettingerfuneralhome.com
Though his time with us has ended, Corky’s love, laughter, and example will remain forever in our hearts
