MORRIS, Shirley Mae – age 74, of Indian Brook, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on Saturday, August 16th, 2025, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Paul and Rita Rose (Jeremy-Howe) Stephens.
Shirley was a respected elder, mentor, dedicated worker, and devoted mother. Throughout her life, she contributed to many fields, including the medical field, education as a teacher/tutor, serving as a BIC clerk and practicing hair dressing. She dedicated 13 years to the Journey of Healing at NADACA and was the coordinator of the Indian Residential School Support Program in Sipekne’katik. Shirley was also a residential school survivor. She found joy in sewing, beading, and creating Mi’kmaq arts and crafts, and she was passionate about sharing her skills with others. Shirley enjoyed playing dice, going to bingo, playing VLTs, attending powwows, travelling and treasure hunting at yard sales. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, James Morris Sr.; her children, Lucina (Tim) Morris, Stephen Morris, James Morris Jr., and Van (Tiffany) Morris; as well as many grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Derrick Stephens and Bryon Stephens; her sisters, Patricia Stephens, Deborah Stephens, Jeannie Stephens, Denice Stephens, and Kelly Stephens; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughters, Ashley Morris and Renee Stephens; and her brothers, Micheal Stephens, Gordon Stephens, and Edgar Stephens.
Visitation will begin at 4pm on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at the Sipekne’Katik Cultural Cabin #3, 20 Mamio’mi Lane, Indian Brook, until the time of the Funeral Service at 11am on Monday, August 25th, 2025, at St. Kateri’s Roman Catholic Church, Indian Brook. Father Phil Thibodeau will be officiating. Cremation will follow.
