Gordon Frederick Kent

March 12, 1939 – August 6, 2025

 

Gordon Kent, age 86, of Halifax, passed away in the VG Hospital on August 6, 2025, after a long illness. He was a son of the late Robert and Mabel (Gibbon) Kent. He was born March 12,1939 in Scotsburn, Pictou County.   The family moved to Stewiacke in 1940, so his father could take over running the family farm.

Gordon moved to Halifax in 1957.  He worked at Simpson Sears and Canadian Admiral Corporation before working at Maritime Tel & Tel for 32 years and never missed a day of work.  He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Stewiacke, until it closed. He was an adherent of St Matthews United Church, Halifax.

His interests were canoeing, camping, family genealogy ,Barbershop Harmony Society (he was a member of The Atlantic Swells) and sang with them for many years.  He was also interested in antique cars. He bought a 1966 Dodge Coronet 2 door Hardtop in 1966. He had it until he sold it in January this year. It was in mint condition.

 

He is survived by his wife Sue (MacKay) Kent; sister Helen (Stan) Buell, and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents Robert and Mabel Kent, he was predeceased by his sister, Margaret and her husband Melvin, his brother Sandy, and his wife Sandra, brothers in law, Victor MacKay and Sam MacKay.

 

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Ettinger’s Funeral Home, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale.

 

Visitation will be held at 6-8PM Tuesday, August 12 at J.A. Snow’s Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, from where the service will be held at 2PM Wednesday, August 13, Rev. Betsy Hogan officiating.  Reception to follow in the funeral home hospitality area.

A committal service will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke at a later date.   

 

In lieu of flowers, donations made to St. Matthew’s United Church, the Canadian Diabetes Association or any charity.
