Obituary of Roland James Hartley
HARTLEY, Roland James – age 92 of Dartmouth, passed away on April 26th, 2025, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Ontario, he was a son of the late Garfield and Marion (MacGillavary) Hartley.
Roland, or Rolly as he was known as, worked at Shearwater as a naval air technician. He was a proud member of the Free Masons for seventy years. He also travelled around the world on various ships and enjoyed seeing the world. Roland retired from the navy after thirty years of service. He then went on to work at IMP for ten years. In his retirement he took up painting and painted until his final days.
Roland was a champion for people who couldn’t advocate for themselves. He loved dogs, teen burgers, long drives, new cars, and loved to learn throughout his life. Roland was a dedicated family man. He loved his wife, daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be missed by all.
Roland is survived by his daughter, Susan Cottreau, Patricia (Wayne) Lloyd; grandchildren, Brandon Cottreau (Alexandria), Mickayla Carmichael (Leslie Weatherbee) and Maddie Lloyd; great grandchildren, Cameron and Parker Cottreau; Addison, Casey and Wyatt Weatherbee.
Besides his parents, Roland was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn (nee Ritcey); siblings, Patricia Mossman and Jack Hartley.
Cremation has taken place under the care of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. No service by Request.
