Joan Lotti McDonald Obituary

McDONALD (PETERSEN), Joan Lotti, age 86, of Indian Brook, passed away suddenly at home on April 15, 2025.  Born in New York, New York, she was a daughter of the late Karl and Louise (Chabot) Petersen.

Joan was the matriarch of the McDonald family and was a constant in the lives of her 11 children, especially during their upbringing.   After raising her family, Joan chose to further her education at Mount Saint Vincent University.   Then in her 40’s, she completed the medical secretary course.  She spent the next 16 years gainfully employed in that role. Joan is remembered by her family for being strong-willed in the face of adversity and for being proud of her “strong constitution”.  She was also known for being compassionate, empathetic and for being a great listener in supporting her family through life’s trials and tribulations.  Joan’s family shared that she always remained positive and engaged in her life and interested in the lives of her family and friends. She had a vast collection of nautical items, including model ships, lighthouses, buoys, figurines.

Joan will be sadly missed by her children, Richard (Edna Palmer) Petersen, Mary McDonald (David Nevin), Alexander (Donna Campbell) McDonald, Sharon McDonald, Lisa McDonald, Michael (Naomi) McDonald and David McDonald; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Carol Pini, Melvina (John) Ford, Louis (Debbie) Petersen, Karl (Diane) Petersen, Robert Petersen and Walter (Debra)Petersen.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her children, Karen McDonald, Joanne McDonald, Robert McDonald and Anne McDonald; grandson, Colby McDonald; great grandchildren, Rylan McDonald and Pearl Julien-Reid; siblings, John, Ronnie, Barbara and Louise.

Visitation will begin at 6pm Friday, April 18, 2025 at 16 Eagles Nest Avenue, Indian Brook.  Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11AM Monday, April 21, 2025, Father Phil Thibodeau officiating.  Cremation to follow with burial to take place at St. Catherine’s RC Cemetery at a later date.
