Obituary of Margaret Alicia Annand
ANNAND, Margaret Alicia – age 97 of Stewiacke, passed away on January 29th,
2025, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born November 27, 1927, in Shubenacadie, she was a daughter of the late Guy and Alicia (Aubrey) Brown.
Fair warning Dad, straighten yourself up, Mum has shed her earthly bonds. Forged in the fire of the Great Depression, she wasted not, nor suffered fools. The daughter of Guy and Alicia (Aubrey) Brown, Margaret was born in Shubenacadie. She moved to Halifax with her parents and siblings after the start of the War. Margaret attended Halifax Academy after high school where she received commercial training and got paid $7 a week for showing up! On her 17th birthday she got her first fulltime job, transcribing cartridges dictated by the manager of GE Halifax, what a wondrous modern world. Around that time Margaret met her future husband, Donald, while vacationing in Maitland, Hants County. Donald’s hair was a problem, overcome by beautifully straight teeth. Donald could fix anything but pets; a catch indeed. Donald and Margaret moved to Stewiacke where they raised five well-loved children. She was an avid reader and writer, hobby botanist, and genealogist. The family cottage at Grand Lake was dear to her heart. She and some of her siblings built cottages in woods on her father’s old lumber mill lands. By boat in the summer or snowmobile in the winter it was a place of “high old times”. After a brief battle with leukemia she left this world, on her own terms.
Margaret is survived by her sister-in-law, Heather Brown; daughter-in-law, Mary Dempster; daughter, Barbara; sons, Bruce (Tracy O’Brien), Mark (Carol Sampson), Douglas (Rosalind Michie); grandchildren, TJ, Mark (Jadine Paw), Luke (Beckey), Mitchell; great grandchildren, Peyton, Madyson, Tanner, Kaiden, and Mason.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald; their son, Robert; son-in-law, Terry Ross; grandson, Jonathan; great grandson, Ryland; siblings, Aubrey (Doris) Brown, Pauline, Maynard (Esther) Brown, Dorothy, Barbara (Chas) Hillier, Guy (Heather) Brown.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger Funeral Homes, Shubenacadie and Elmsdale. A private graveside service will be held in the spring.
Donations in Margaret’s memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
