BARKHOUSE, Velma Marguerite - 97, Stewiacke, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent's Nursing Home in Halifax on Monday August 21, 2017. Born in Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late Lorne and Florence (Newcombe) Barkhouse. Velma began her teaching career in 1940 and taught all across Canada until she retired in 1979. She ended her teaching career at Prince Andrew High School, Dartmouth where she had taught from 1960 until 1979. She enjoyed tatting, knitting, reading, crossword puzzles and volunteer tutoring. She also enjoyed ballroom dancing in which she had a teaching certificate. After retiring from teaching Velma played the organ in both the United Church and the Baptist Church in Stewiacke for several years. Velma enjoyed travelling in her younger years and had been all over the world. She is survived by her sister, Lorna Beach, Halifax; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Stanley Barkhouse, and her sister, Judy Brooks. She was quick with a big smile; she had a big heart and will be missed greatly by family and friends. A private family graveside committal service will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East, Rev. Martin Reid officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Nova Scotia, or to the palliative care or chapel fund of St. Vincent's Nursing Home. We would like to extend special thanks to the St. Vincent's Nursing Home’s caring staff, management, volunteers, and residents. Condolences, words of comfort and memories of Velma may be shared with the family at: www.ettingerfuneralhome.com
