Obituary of Walter William Higgins

HIGGINS, Walter William – 81, Meaghers Grant, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital with his loving family by his side. Born in Moose River, he was a son of the late Clyde and Lu Lu (Rhind) Higgins. Walter was a member of the Ashlar Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years. He loved being on the golf course with his friends and wife, and spent many hours in his cherished gardens and greenhouse with his late dog, Shadow by his side. He was always involved in his community and was loved by all who knew him. He was a volunteer firefighter for many years. For much of his career he was an auto mechanic and eventually retired from the Department of Natural Resources as Fleet Supervisor. He was a jack of all trades who took great pride in his craftmanship. Walter was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be forever missed by his loving wife, Doris (Flemming) Higgins; daughter, Debbie (Mike) Withrow, Lantz; sons, Craig (Susan) Higgins, Middle Musquodoboit; David (Leah) Higgins, Lake Echo; many cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis (Gerald) Goldsworthy, Cathy Higgins, Linda (Roderick) Lively, Barbara Jodrey, Marlene Lowther; brothers, Ken (Sheila) Higgins, Boyd (Karen) Higgins; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Judy; brothers, Keith, Blair, Earl, Eugene. Visitation will be held 6-9pm Tuesday, April 18 with a Masonic Service at 7pm in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Highway 2, Shubenacadie, from where a funeral service will be held 11am Wednesday, April 19, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. Interment to follow in Meaghers Grant Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment in the Meaghers Grant Community Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter’s memory may be made to the SPCA or the Canadian Cancer Society.
